The Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics
The seventeenth-annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics will be held from Thursday, January 9 through Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Hilton Palmer House in Chicago, IL, concurrently with the meetings of the Society of Christian Ethics and the Society of Jewish Ethics.
We welcome paper, panel, or roundtable proposals dealing with all aspects of Muslim/Islamic ethics broadly defined. Paper and panel proposals employing a wide range of methodologies and approaches are welcome, including theoretical and applied ethics, works concerned with the premodern, or modern periods, utilizing historical, social-scientific, literary, theological, philosophical, or legal approaches. Areas of interest include but are not limited to Islamic/Muslim ethics of science, politics, gender and sexuality, economics, race, bioethics, medicine, animals and the environment, and recently published books on any of these topics.
This year, SSME especially encourages proposals for either single papers or panels that address the following themes:
- Foodways and environmental determinisms
- Water access, ecology, and capitalism
- Medicine and bioethics
- Digital technologies and AI
- Social justice, decarceration, and de/liberalization
- Community-oriented ethics in the modern era
- Socio/religious and /political issues specific to Israel-Palestine
- Feminist ethical critique and post/modern democracy
- Reproductive health and self-determination
- Legal, ethical, sexual, and political autonomies
- Transnationalisms and transethnicities
Graduate students and early career scholars are encouraged to submit proposals. SSME meetings allow for robust and intimate intellectual exchange and feedback among all participants, making it an ideal setting for early career scholars and advanced graduate students.
Proposals for a single presenter should include the following:
• Cover page including the contact information of the presenter (name, institutional affiliation, phone numbers, and e-mail address)
• Descriptive paper title
• Abstract (500-word minimum, 600 maximum) without identifying information
• Selected bibliography
Proposals for panels should include the following:
- Cover page with a list of all panelists (including contact information), including the convener and discussant (if any)
- Panel abstract (200-300 words)
- Descriptive paper titles
- Paper abstracts (500-600 words) without identifying information
- Selected bibliography for each paper
Proposals for roundtable or pre-circulated paper panels should include the following:
- Cover page with a list of all panelists (including contact information), including the convener and discussant (if any)
- Panel abstract that should include the format/mechanics of the panel (500-600 words)
- Selected bibliography for the panel as a whole

The deadline for submission of proposals is June 28. Successful applicants will be notified by August 15. All presenters at the annual meeting of the SSME must be members of the Society.

The Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics (SSME) is a scholarly association dedicated to advancing intellectual inquiry in Muslim ethics, including the relation of Muslim ethics to other ethical traditions and to social, political, and economic problems. The Society supports academic work in both philosophical and applied ethics, historical as well as contemporary issues. The Society also aims to promote the teaching of Muslim ethics in colleges, universities, and theological schools, to improve understanding of Muslim ethics in the broader society through publications and other educational activities, and to provide a community of discourse and debate for those engaged professionally in the study of issues pertaining to Muslim ethics across the full array of academic disciplines and fields of study.
